What is an email list?
An email list is a list of people who have consented to give you their email addresses. One way to do this is to offer them something free of value. I call these ‘freebies’ – the marketing term is ‘lead magnet’.
So you could create a highly powerful freebie that will solve one of their problems.

Then you have their consent to send them your amazing emails!
In this blog post, I’ll explain why building an email list of dog guardians is such a great strategy for 2024 and the long-term future of your business.
Building an email list helps you consistently connect and have an impact on dog guardians all around the world
Your skills as a force-free dog trainer are in demand around the globe. What better way to help dog guardians than to be able to email them when you have online coaching spaces available, or with free tips, even if they can’t afford your services right now.
Building an email list is a great way to nurture dog guardians and help them become more aware of force-free training and how it can help their dog
People are taking longer to make decisions right now and even longer when they are considering purchasing things. If you set up an email list and email dog guardians regularly with free tips and tricks, success stories of other clients and ways to work with you, they are more likely to trust and book with you.
Did you know that people have to have way over 30 touchpoints with your brand and services in 2024 to make a decision?
By this, I mean that they need to read some of your content, watch your videos, read a few of your emails before they trust you and see you as someone who may be able to help them.
So if you have an email list, this is an easy way to stay in regular contact with them and keep yourself top of mind.
Building an email list gives dog guardians a taste of how it would be if they worked with you
I thoroughly recommend writing as you speak so that you sound like you. That way, people get a taste of what it could be like if they work with you. So your email list will amplify what people see when they watch your videos on Instagram and YouTube.
You can even send them to your latest content like a YouTube video or a blog post, so you are giving them even more free value.
Regular emails are such a good opportunity to connect with them and show them what results you can get for their dog too. Telling stories and sharing wins are great for nurturing your list and selling without feeling like a sleazy car salesman.
Then when it comes to sharing that you have spaces available inside your membership or your 1:1 coaching, people will be more likely to book because they have been taken on a nurturing journey by you first.
I always think of the buyer journey like this when it comes to selling.
You wouldn’t ask someone to marry you on the first date.
It’s the same with selling and email marketing gives you that chance for people to get to know you and feel connected so when you sell it doesn’t feel weird for them or you.
You aren’t subject to social media algorithms
I don’t know about you but I’ve only just got over the fact that I find social media exhausting – I always have. Now I manage my time effectively but I know realistically that any social media platform could be shut down tomorrow – it happened to me in December 2022 and this put my email list into sharp focus as a result.
Don’t misunderstand me – social media is an important part of my marketing strategy but it isn’t the ONLY part.
So my business isn’t as vulnerable to outside influences as it was.
So this is the question to ask yourself.
How would you sell your services if, for example, Instagram shut your account and you were in the process of trying to recover it?
Fortunately, I had a lovely list of people to email and I came through the 3 week process, but it really makes you think.
The great thing about your email list is that it is yours and no-one else’s.
A bigger audience = bigger potential sales
It’s logical that the more dog guardians join your list, the more will buy from you. Did you know that email marketing is the most profitable out of all the forms of marketing. For every $1 spent on marketing, the average business makes $42 so that’s a return of investment of 4200%!
I always recommend dog trainers or any business owner in any niche to grow their email list as early as possible because it can become a great source of extra income as your business grows.
Imagine this – the average sales figure for a sales email promoting your services/membership/course is around 1-3%
So let’s take 1% and different list figures.
List of:
100 = 1 sale
500 = 5 sales
1000 = 10 sales
5000 = 50 sales
10,000 = 100 sales
50, 000 = 500 sales
The figures are mind-bending as the potential for extra income aren’t they!
Building an email list means you can grow your business without sacrificing more time
The fascinating thing about building your email list is that it will still take you the same amount of time to write and load up your emails. But with a larger list, the return on your time investment is way way more.
So you could focus say for example 75% of your time on your clients now and 25% of your time on growing your email list, and as it grows, so will your income. Then you can shift if you wanted to, to working in a way that works best for you, knowing that your email list is a powerful way for you to earn more income when it works for you.
In conclusion
Building an email list is something I suggest that all online business owners do as soon as possible, as it’s such a great way to connect and make impact and extra income.
